Bag!

Viv likes the paper bags.

She's also pretty fond of my hats. Her latest trick is sneaking up on me and stealing my hat, then trying to run away with it.

We've had a bit of a cold spell move in the past day- I think she's suited up to go visit the geese down the street:

Presents

Lunar has been keeping a close eye on Viv lately since she likes to sneak up on him and whack him with stuff or try to strangle him with beads. Viv also got some presents from her cousins Nick and Laura- a chipmunk from Nick and a duck from Laura. She seems pretty fond of them.

Pod and Laura and the Zoo

Pod and Laura were in town yesterday and we went to lunch (shrimp po-boy, undressed, for Laura and a roast beef po-boy with a side of creole mustard for Pod- if you could use a sandwich to set a clock, these guys are who you want to count on)- and we went to the zoo. I have more photos to put up but I'm having the usual weekend posting problems. At any rate, there's a picture of pregnant Alice on the carousel which does a decent job of showing her belly (for Marjie and Auntie Em).

24 Week Ultrasound

Alice had another ultrasound this morning and everyone got the a-ok. The lump is looking healthy and all the measurements and those kinds of things are right on track.

Also, Viv has really ramped up the cat decorating. She's given up the toilet paper and is now trying to strangle him instead (which I'm all in favor of).

Natchez

We spent the weekend in Natchez, MS and managed to do some hiking around the St. Catherine Wildlife Preserve and the Homochito National Forest. Saturday was pretty wet early on:

We took Viv to the Natchez Indian mounds. It was pretty swampy, but we figured some rubber boots would do the trick. She managed to find some puddles nearly big enough to swim in and proceeded to give it a try.

Anyway, she was soaked head to toe by the time we left. We hadn't packed an extra set of warm clothes an didn't want to head all the way back to the cabin for new stuff. So, we just stripped her down and hit a small store in downtown Natchez.

We got some new clothes and had BBQ.

Then the sun came out.

So we went for a hike in the wildlife preserve south of Natchez. We saw a pair of wild turkey but didn't have the camera ready in time.

We also saw some armadillos. It's rather rare to see them in the non-'squished by the side of the road' state. It turns out they seem immensely stupid and incredibly unaware of people sneaking up them. That might explain their usual squished state.

Here's the view from right outside our cabin.

So, on Sunday we went down to the Homochito National Forest and did some backcountry hiking. We hadn't planned on doing any long hikes since the weather was supposed to be crap, so we didn't bring any good topo maps in with us. We got our hands on a crappy xerox of a topo that the Forest Service had and set out for what we thought would be an out and back hike down some incredibly poorly marked trails. Alice had her mind set that we needed to get to a lake on the map and after an hour or so we managed to figure just where in the hell we were. The trail spit us out onto a Forest Service road and I managed to sort out the lake was at the base of a ravine about a 1/3 mile to the south of us. We took off down the road and managed to spot the lake off in the distance and much to my surprise Alice agreed to do a pretty lengthy off-trail excursion to get to the lake.

Anyway, after making it to the lake and deciphering the crappy map, we realized we'd hiked about 2 hours through backwoods trails and non-trails to arrive at a lake that was only about a 10 minute walk from where we'd parked. I'll bring my own maps next time.

Anyway, Viv had fun.

The next few are from the playground near our cabin, where we saw another pair of wild turkey (and didn't have a camera ready).

Valentine's Day

Viv made out pretty well for Valentine's Day- books, balloons, candy and all that jazz.

As for Al and I, we went out for a really fantastic dinner at a local place that brought a new chef on board recently. We ended up having a beet and goat cheese soup, lamb carpaccio, es cargo and oysters in a port wine reduction, roasted chicken and mushroom terrine with a garlic and shallot sauce, along with homemade ice cream for dessert. For all you N.O. locals the restaurant was the Country Club in Bywater. Their everyday fare isn't quite so fancy but if it's the same people preparing it, it'll be damn good.

We're heading off camping for three days in Mississippi tomorrow, so it's unlikely I'll post again before Monday. However, the weather is probably going to be a bit foul so maybe we'll hit a coffee shop at some point and I'll put something up.
