We spent the weekend in Natchez, MS and managed to do some hiking around the St. Catherine Wildlife Preserve and the Homochito National Forest. Saturday was pretty wet early on:

We took Viv to the Natchez Indian mounds. It was pretty swampy, but we figured some rubber boots would do the trick. She managed to find some puddles nearly big enough to swim in and proceeded to give it a try.

Anyway, she was soaked head to toe by the time we left. We hadn't packed an extra set of warm clothes an didn't want to head all the way back to the cabin for new stuff. So, we just stripped her down and hit a small store in downtown Natchez.

We got some new clothes and had BBQ.

Then the sun came out.

So we went for a hike in the wildlife preserve south of Natchez. We saw a pair of wild turkey but didn't have the camera ready in time.

We also saw some armadillos. It's rather rare to see them in the non-'squished by the side of the road' state. It turns out they seem immensely stupid and incredibly unaware of people sneaking up them. That might explain their usual squished state.

Here's the view from right outside our cabin.

So, on Sunday we went down to the Homochito National Forest and did some backcountry hiking. We hadn't planned on doing any long hikes since the weather was supposed to be crap, so we didn't bring any good topo maps in with us. We got our hands on a crappy xerox of a topo that the Forest Service had and set out for what we thought would be an out and back hike down some incredibly poorly marked trails. Alice had her mind set that we needed to get to a lake on the map and after an hour or so we managed to figure just where in the hell we were. The trail spit us out onto a Forest Service road and I managed to sort out the lake was at the base of a ravine about a 1/3 mile to the south of us. We took off down the road and managed to spot the lake off in the distance and much to my surprise Alice agreed to do a pretty lengthy off-trail excursion to get to the lake.

Anyway, after making it to the lake and deciphering the crappy map, we realized we'd hiked about 2 hours through backwoods trails and non-trails to arrive at a lake that was only about a 10 minute walk from where we'd parked. I'll bring my own maps next time.

Anyway, Viv had fun.

The next few are from the playground near our cabin, where we saw another pair of wild turkey (and didn't have a camera ready).
