On the walk to the Gentilly stage, which I prefer over the Acura stage in back, we stopped for a mango freeze and frozen margaritas. Yes - they have 2 flavors of frozen drinks now (2nd year now, I think), margarita and punch ("red" flavor) - and they have wine and champagne. Crazy. I may never have to drink an MGD again. After getting our spot picked out, Viv and I went to the Grandstands bathroom where the attendant gave Viv her choice of lollipop. Viv did great, btw, and did not have an accident all day long.
We really enjoyed the Movers. They played some songs we'd never heard before and some of our old favorites too. They had a DJ play on their last song and made a Beastie Boys and a U2 reference to reward all the older parents like us. Speaking of which, Bill Mague and his family (Kathy & her family, plus Joel & Susie) set up camp right next to us, so there's a few pictures here with Bill in the background. The Magues all look wonderful and happy. We ran into quite a few old Franklin and McMain people, including Davis who seems unscathed by his more extensive recent celebrity. And we saw the Mercers at the Movers too with their son Sebastian.
We also ate our other fest favorite, Prejean's gumbo, later at the gospel tent where we caught some of the Blind Boys of Alamaba until the kids needed to move again. We also heard a wee bit of the Allman Brothers Band, Anita Baker, and Darius Rucker as we walked the track at the end of the day, and all three of the bands sounded great. The acoustics for the Allmans, who were playing Acura, were amazing - the best I've heard on that stage in years. Wondering whether it was because the band is louder than many acts that stage sees or whether they've finally done something about Congo Square drift and poor amplification. If anything, the Allmans seemed to drift a wee bit into the Congo Square area, but closer to the stage, even by the track, the sound seemed really good at all the stages. It was a wonderful day.
